Supporting Blind and Low-Vision Visitors
Event Description: This program is designed to equip cultural spaces with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality sighted guiding services and foster an inclusive environment for blind and low vision guests. Through interactive workshops and hands-on demonstrations, participants will learn proper guiding techniques, best practices for assisting individuals with visual disabilities, and strategies for creating a welcoming and accessible cultural space. By the end of this program participants will be equipped with strategies to make all guests feel welcomed, respected, and at ease in cultural spaces. This is an in-person only event with limited registration.

Amanda Hetzel

I am a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist and Vision Rehabilitation Therapist at Second Sense, a non-profit organization in Chicago that provides free vision rehabilitation services and support to adults with vision loss. I have been with the company just over two years and started the day after graduating with my Master’s in Special Education from Northern Illinois University . Prior to working at Second Sense, I worked as a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor at Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California for approximately 10 years. I am a native Chicagoan born and raised in the North suburbs and I now live in the city. I enjoy rock climbing, biking, playing board games, and anything outdoors.
