SUMMARY:Kelsey Street Press 50th Anniversary at The Poetry Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Kelsey Street Press\, a small press with an explosive history of publishing radical queer and trans BIPOC and women authors\, celebrates its 50th anniversary. Publishing experimental feminist poetics since 1974\, Kelsey Street Press has been pivotal in addressing gender disparity in publishing. Rena Rosenwasser\, a co-founder of the press\, has four poetry collections published by the press across four decades: Elevators (2011)\, Isle (1992)\, Simulacra (1986)\, and Desert Flats (1979). SUMMARY:The Murmuring Grief of the Americas at the Poetry Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Three award-winning poets read from their latest collections grappling with landscapes of grief. National Book-winning Chicago poet Daniel Borzutzky’s The Murmuring Grief of the Americas exhumes the necrophilic underbelly of carceral capitalism and authoritarianism in the hemispheric Americas. Pulitzer Prize-winning language poet Rae Armantrout’s Go Figure tries to find humor and consolation in a disaster-ridden world. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Forrest Gander’s novel-poem Mojave Ghost takes grief on a memory-ridden pilgrimage home\, walking 800 miles across the Mojave Desert. \nMurmurs from the poets: \nWe ask the murmurers what they want to do with themselves now that they don’t get to live anymore. They say they want to love all the things they could not love when they were\nalive.\n— Daniel Borzutzy\, from The Murmuring Grief of the Americas \nA sentimental journey through a doomsday\nscenario\n— Rae Armantrout\, from Go Figure \nWalking the rift\, they keep their voices small. Shallow vibrations scuttle along the fracture\nzone.\n— Forrest Ganders\, from Mojave Ghost \nThis program is part of the Poetry Foundation’s fall 2024 season\, Murmuring Americas. All Poetry Foundation events are completely free of charge and open to the public\, though advanced registration is encouraged. The performance space is ADA-compliant and wheelchair-accessible\, and the program will feature CART captioning and ASL interpretation. SUMMARY:Edgar Arceneaux\, Until\, Until\, Until . . . at the Museum of Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Edgar Arceneaux is a contemporary artist working in Los Angeles\, whose primary materials are histories and memories marred by gaps in logic\, clichés\, and erasures. Working within these gaps\, Arceneaux applies a surreal\, dream-like lens to pry open the messy contents of history\, and pull what we think we already know into new shapes. \nArceneaux’s live performance Until\, Until\, Until . . . restages Broadway legend Ben Vereen’s infamous 1981 blackface performance at Ronald Reagan’s inaugural gala\, and its aftermath. As an homage to vaudevillian Bert Williams\, one of America’s first mainstream Black entertainers\, Ben Vereen performed a moving tribute to Williams on national television\, donned in blackface make up\, as was required of Black vaudevillian performers in the early 20th century. In the first half of his performance\, Vereen performed a song and dance routine in the vaudevillian style. The second half of his show contained biting commentary about the history of Black performance in the US\, assimilation into white norms\, and white supremacy\, but woefully\, that section was edited out of the national broadcast\, leading to a national outrage and Vereen’s career derailment. Vereen was never allowed to tell his side of the story . . . until now. \nA multilayered\, abstract fever dream of a play\, Arceneaux’s Until\, Until\, Until . . . invites audiences to directly experience Vereen’s censored performance\, deemed too dangerous to air on national television. \nEdgar Arceneaux’s Until\, Until\, Until . . . was commissioned by Performa and MIT’s Vera List Visual Arts Center for the Performa 15 Biennial. Now\, 10 years since its debut\, this restaging is an opportunity to reflect on what’s changed in the years since. \nThe MCA presentation is organized by Laura Paige Kyber\, Assistant Curator of Performance. \nNote: This performance begins with a cocktail hour inside the theater. \nImmerse yourself in the world of the performance while listening to a vaudeville-era playlist. Audience members are welcome to arrive up until the performance officially kicks off at 8:30 pm. Light snacks and drinks for audiences age 21 and over are available for purchase. The performance has a run time of 50 minutes. \nAccessibility includes: CART caption and audio description for October 19th performance. \nhttps://visit.mcachicago.org/events/edgar-arceneaux-until-until-until/

SUMMARY:Desire Lines at AMC NEWCITY 14
DESCRIPTION:Ahmad is an aging trans man who has long suppressed his desire for other men\, fearing stigma and questioning if his gender identity and sexuality are at odds. He turns to an LGBTQ archive for answers\, digging through oral histories and interviews from trans men past and present. He immerses himself so deeply in the archive that he begins to time travel through it\, living among stories and activism that crack open binary notions around gender identity and sexual desire. Aided by these stories — and by a young trans archivist — Ahmad begins to unravel his own complicated identity.
