DESCRIPTION:Robert Hood\, an acclaimed techno originator and founding member of Detroit’s Underground Resistance (UR) who created the commissioned soundtrack for artist Arthur Jafa’s APEX (2013)\, joins Jafa in conversation. They discuss the social\, aesthetic\, and technological relationships between techno and what Jafa refers to as a desire to create “a cinema capable of matching the power\, beauty\, and alienation of Black music.” The conversation is moderated by DeForrest Brown Jr.\, musician\, representative of the campaign to Make Techno Black Again\, and author of Assembling a Black Counter Culture (Primary Information\, 2022)\, a comprehensive history of techno through a Black theoretical framework. \nThat evening\, the MCA partners with smartbar to present a full DJ set by the legend himself: Robert Hood. DESCRIPTION:Artist and composer Elisa Harkins (Cherokee/Muscogee) created Wampum / ᎠᏕᎳ ᏗᎦᎫᏗ as an expression of Indigenous Futurism\, blending electronic dance music with Indigenous languages to revitalize and celebrate them through live performance. Presented in partnership with the Center for Native Futures\, this innovative performance features Harkins singing in a combination of Cherokee\, English\, and Muscogee (Creek). Back-up dancers move rhythmically to electronic dance tracks inspired by Indigenous music. Both dreamy and intense\, the evening fuses tradition with the contemporary to transform how pop music looks and sounds. \nThe evening begins with a short opening set by interdisciplinary singer/songwriter Kalyn Fay (Cherokee/Muscogee). DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, February 7\, Full Spectrum Features presents a selection of contemporary trans short films from Ireland presented in person by Dublin-based curator James Hudson: from an artist’s self-destructive spiral to giallo-inspired rape revenge by way of a surreal techno-horror\, to a multidimensional dramedy starring an up-and-coming stand-up comedian and more. \nJames Hudson is a Dublin-based programmer at the forefront of trans Irish cinema\, both showcasing international trans filmmaking in Ireland and bringing Irish-made trans films to the world stage. He is traveling to Chicago specifically for this one-night-only event\, part one of a trans cinema cultural exchange between Chicago and Dublin. \nThe shorts program will be followed by a post-screening discussion with curator James Hudson\, moderated by Henry Hanson. \nAccessibility: All films will be presented with open captions.  The post-screening Q&A will have live CART captioning. \nNote on wheelchair accessibility: The building and theater are accessible via ramps.
